The jacket features puffed shoulders with shoulder pads, a raised collar, and full-length sleeves with three buttons at the cuff. It fastens at the front with five black shiny buttons and fabric loops. Princess seams run through both the front and back to cinch the waist. The velvet gives the piece a rich, formal quality, while remaining sculptural and symbolic of the Saint Laurent rive gauche construction.
